The Isles of Shoals & the New Hampshire Coast
Portsmouth, the Piscataqua and the outer ledges
New Hampshire's short coast and the Isles of Shoals guarded the approach to Portsmouth and the Piscataqua, one of New England's great shipbuilding rivers.
The Shoals' ledges and the strong Piscataqua tide wrecked coasters and fishermen for three centuries, and the 1813 loss of the Sagunto is still remembered on Smuttynose.
